What is Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, for short, posits that while we can't always directly control our emotional responses, we can influence them by examining and altering the thoughts and behaviours that contribute to them. By identifying and changing unproductive thinking patterns and unhelpful behaviours, individuals can create positive changes in their emotional experiences, leading to improved mental well-being.
We all have beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world, shaped by life experiences. These beliefs influence how we interpret events and guide our emotions and behaviours. Negative beliefs can lead to distorted thoughts and feelings. CBT helps individuals identify these beliefs, understand how past experiences shaped them, and challenge them to create healthier, more realistic ways of thinking and responding.
CBT is the recommended treatment for OCD and many anxiety disorders. It has been extensively researched and well-documented in terms of improvement to people's lives.
CBT is usually a short-term therapy that lasts about 10 to 16 sessions, with some people needing slightly less and others slightly more.
